Twist Sidetable, 2018

Solo university project with Block Design

The live project brief was to design a range of products that would fit into their colourful range of home and office accessories.

The twist side table was created to help local companies support each other through collaboration. The twist side table was the first product in a range that demonstrated the collaboration between Cornwall based Block Design and Devon based SolidWool.

The side table was made with accessibility in mind, focusing on transport, assembly and disassembly. The design avoids the use of fixings by making the legs screw directly into the tabletop offering a quick and easy installation. The legs are made from oak and the tabletop is made from a mixture of wool and eco-resin, coloured by a blue pignment.

The packaging designed to go with the product was minimal, reducing waste but still making for a secure hold of all the components as well as showing off the materials. The packaging acts as both a carry case and a display case for retail outlets. It is made from 2-ply cardboard with a minimalist label.

At the end of this project Block Design offered two work placements to two promising students. A promising student would be someone that showed good company understanding and designed products of interest to Block. I was lucky enough to be one of the two students selected. However, they had to withdraw the offer shortly after Christmas due to being unviable.
